Sin dalla loro formazione nel 1998 i mùm hanno creato un’elettronica sublimememente calda, luminosa e ricca, infondendola del loro suono unico e del loro carattere. Ciò che li contraddistingue da tutti gli altri sono le melodie forti e giocosamente incantate, e l’integrazione quasi stregonesca di tecnologie analogiche e digitali. Suonando un assortimento di strumenti e percussioni assieme a della ben programmata elettronica ed a registrazioni fatte in giro a catturare suoni e rumori, il talento, l’inventiva ed il fiuto per l’esplorazione musicale della band sono immediatamente percepibili.
Il loro primo disco, un 10” a metà con la band al femminile Spùnk, vide la luce nell’estate del 1998 e dopo alcune collaborazioni seguì l’album d’esordio “Yesterday Was Dramatic, Today Is OK” che ha ottenuto una valanga di lodi da parte della stampa ed un generale consenso. Un progetto di remix, 'Please Smile My Noise Bleed', venne anch’esso pubblicato dalla Morr Music label nel Novembre 2001. L’esordio su FatCat, 'Finally We Are No-One', è stato pubblicato nel Maggio 2002 ed è stato seguito da innumerevoli tour che hanno portato la band più volte in giro per il mondo, incantando il pubblico ricreando i lavori registrati con il fuoco principale sugli strumenti dal vivo, accompagnati dalla strumentazione elettronica e dal laptop. Il secondo disco su FatCat, 'Summer Make Good' è stato pubblicato nel maggio May 2004, affiancato da due singoli, 'Nightly Cares' e 'Dusk Log'.
Fin dall’esordio hanno anche composto ed eseguito la loro colonna sonora del classico film di Sergei Eisenstein 'La Corazzata Potemkin', che è stata suonata dal vivo a Hafnafjordur Iceland, Brooklyn Lyceum New York USA, e al famoso Gijon Film Festival Spain. Hanno anche composto la musica per un dramma radiofonico sulla radio nazionale Islandese 'Svefnhjólið' (Sleeping Wheel) di Gyrdir Eliasson, che ha vinto il premio Nordic Radio-theater prize. Nel 2005 sono stati invitati ad Amsterdam dall’ Holland Festival a collaborare con la National Dutch Chamber Orchestra per realizzare della musica basata su varie composizioni del compositore Iannis Xenakis per uno degli spettacoli principali del festival.
L’inizio del 2006 vede fiorire la creatività della band, inziando da due remix per Goldfrapp dei brani ‘Number One’ e ‘Never Know’. Quindi due leggendari DJ sets al FatCat Festival in Belgio a febbraio e al SXSW ad Austin Texas. Con un insieme di piatti, effetti, laptops, microfoni giocattolo, vecchie registrazioni in cassetta e voci assieme al proprio materiale registrato, strane cover elettroniche di amici, musica folk tzigana e generale follia sul palco i dj sets hanno avuto un tale impatto che la band sta preparando un DJ mix cd in pubblicazione nel 2008. Sono stati anche invitati come DJ al 2006 Summer Sonic Festival in Giappone e come headliner alla tenda Rob Da Bank del Festival per Radio 1 sull’Isola di Wight.
Durante il 2006, hanno anche scritto e registrato il nuovo album in uscita il 21 settembre 2007 su FatCat Records. A dicembre del 2006 sono state pubblicate le Peel Sessions che i múm hanno registrato nel 2002 per la BBC. La session comprende versioni live di “Scratched Bicycle / Smell Memory”, “Awake On A Train” “Now Theres That Fear Again”, “The Ballad Of the Broken String”.
La line up corrente dei múm è composta dai membri fondatori Gunnar Örn Tynes e Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason mentre per l’attività di tour e registrazione si aggiungono i loro amici Ólöf Arnalds (violino / viola / chitarra / voce), Eiríkur Orri Olafsson (tromba / pianette / moog / whistling), Hildur Gudnadottir (violoncello / voce), mr.Silla (Voce / various) e Finlander, Samuli Kosminen (batteria / percussioni)
Ormai manca poco alla conclusioni del 2007, e sicuramente gli album che usciranno da qui alla fine dell'anno non saranno inseriti nella mia classifica, in quanto è troppo breve il periodo per l'ascolto (in realtà è due mesi che non ascolto altro che In Rainbows).

Tra gli artisti italiani, mi hanno impressionato i Port Royal, con Afraid to Dance.
Da citare per l'ottimo album, anche questi artisti: Modest Mouse, Fiery Furnaces, Andreau Bird, Deerhunter, Cloud Cult, Cold War Kids, Menomena, The National, e i !!!.
Mi aspettavo qualcosa di meglio dagli Interpol, dai Clinic, dai Piano Magic, Bright Eyes, Explosions in the Sky, Low.
Non uno, ma due concerti: i Radiohead raddoppiano la data dell'Arena Civica di mercoledì 18 giugno e decidono di suonare nel capoluogo lombardo anche martedì 17.
"La prevendita per il concerto del 18 giugno procede a ritmi elevatissimi e per soddisfare le richieste che stanno arrivando da tutto il mondo (dal Brasile a Tokio) i Radiohead annunciano il secondo concerto a Milano. Questi due concerti saranno gli unici che la band terrà in Italia", recita un comunicato di Indipendente, agenzia organizzatrice degli show.
Il prezzo dei biglietti, già disponibili in prevendita, è lo stesso annunciato per il primo concerto: prato e prima tribuna 50 euro + prevendita, seconda tribuna 30 euro + prevendita.
Antony ha annunciato quale sarà il titolo del suo nuovo album con i Johnsons: l'LP si chiamerà 'The Crying Light' e uscirà la prossima primavera.
In un'intervista al magazine 'Harp' Antony ha parlato del nuovo lavoro: "Molte canzoni sono costruite col pianoforte. Strutturalmente sono un po' più sperimentali, ma ce ne sono anche di normali... Spero di riuscire ad unire queste due cose insieme, di modo che il disco possa essere qualcosa di più che un collage di canzoni."
"E' un disco che parla della natura e dell'uomo. Nel mio ultimo album, tutto aveva a che fare con tristezza e redenzione. Questo è molto più estremo, in entrambe le direzioni. Molte delle canzoni sono più piene di pensieri, più filosofiche.
Tra i titoli citati nell'intervista, ci sono 'Her Eyes Underneath the Ground', 'Give My Name' e 'Everglade'.
'Women As Lovers' è il titolo del nuovo album degli Xiu Xiu, che uscirà il 29 gennaio negli Stati Uniti (quindi, in teoria, qualche giorno prima da noi).
Seguito di 'The Air Force' del 2006, contiene 14 tracce suonate dalla line-up che si vede attualmente ai concerti, ossia il frontman Jamie Stewart, Caralee McElroy, Ches Smith (batteria) e Devin Hoff (basso).

"Ormai parte integrante delle più recenti scalette dei live, il brano di apertura ha ritmi pesanti, colpi di batteria e battiti di mani sincopati ed è minimale e scarno, con il sofferente sliding di chitarra di Jonny Greenwood, ormai suo marchio di fabbrica, ricorrente lungo tutto il pezzo. Il testo è enigmatico: "You used to be alright / What happened? / Etcetera, etcetera / Facts for whatever / 15 steps / Then a sheer drop"."

"Suonata per la prima volta live nel 2006, questo titolo è stato citato più volte nei post che la band ha scritto sul proprio blog nei mesi precedenti alla realizzazione dell'LP. Un po' più affine al suono di chitarra dei Radiohead delle origini, questa canzone contiene un ritmo coinvolgente e una solida chitarra blues."
'Nude'
"Scritta più di 10 anni fa, 'Nude' è stato sempre considerato un classico 'dimenticato'. La canzone, che una volta si chiamava 'Big Ideas (Don't Get Any)', non è mai apparsa sugli album precedenti perché la band non riusciva ad accordarsi circa l'approccio da avere in studio di registrazione. Il brano si apre con un taglio orchestrale incanalato dal cantato di Thom Yorke. E' una canzone lenta, eterea, sostenuta dal classico modo di suonare la batteria di Phil Selway, non molto diverso da quello che aveva prodotto per 'Pyramid Song'."
'Weird Fishes/Arpeggi'
"Questa canzone fu suonata per la prima volta da Thom Yorke e Jonny Greenwood in un concerto speciale alla Royal Festival Hall di Londra nel 2005. Da allora la band l'ha sempre suonata nei tour. Piuttosto tranquilla e rilassata ma dotata di una base ritmica alquanto 'dancey', Thom Yorke canta di essere mangiato dai vermi e dai succitati strani pesci (i 'Weird Fishes' del titolo)."

"Questa canzone ha debuttato live nel giugno dell'anno scorso. Attraversta da un violoncello, e modellata da una pulsante melodia elettronica, è una sorta di canzone d'amore a metà. Le liriche recitano: "I'm a cloud of moths / Who just wants to share your light/I'm just an insect / Trying to get out of the night", "You only stick with me / Because there are no others."
'Faust ARP'
"Mai suonata dal vivo sinora, sebbene il titolo della canone comparve nei post del blog. Mutevole e orchestrale ma allo stesso tempo orecchiabile e scattante, è definita da una chitarra acustica in perfetto stile Radiohead, che rimanda molto a 'Paranoid Android'."
'Reckoner'
Altro numero decisamente orchestrale, questa canzone risale a sessioni precedenti a 'Hail To The Thief' ed è stata anche suonata live prima che il precedente album uscisse. La voce di Thom Yorke sembra un coro. Uno dei pezzi preferiti dai fans, che hanno invocato sui vari forum la presenza del pezzo nel disco, che inizialmente non doveva esservi incluso."
'House Of Cards'
"Ha debuttato nel 2005 suonata solamente da Thom con la chitarra acustica. Una canzone minimale, reggae-ata e più leggera rispetto ai numerosi momenti orchestrali di 'In Rainbows'. Il tocco di chitarra è piuttosto allegro."
'Jigsaw Falling Into Place'
Conosciuta precedentemente col titolo di 'Open Pick', ha debuttato live nel tour 2006. Un intro di chitarra spagnoleggiante dà il via a un trascinante loop di chitarra acustica e batteria, e quindi a un riff di chitarra elettrica sempre più incisivo."
'Videotape'
"La più ampiamente anticipata delle nuove canozoni. Suonata live per la prima volta nel 2006, è minimale e scarna, costruita attorno alla chitarra cupa di Thom. Batteria ed effetti circolari entrano tardi nel pezzo, ma al di là di tutto rimane un brano raffinato e tenero. Un'altra canzone considerata dai fans come un highlight.
